Laptop Review: ASUS VivoBook 14 X409JA-EK237T
The 14-inch ASUS VivoBook 14 X409JA-EK237T is powered by the 10th gen intel core i3 1005G1 dual-core processor and Intel UHD graphics G1. The RAM and storage are configured with 8 GB of DDr4 RAM in dual channel and 512 GB of NVMe SSD is lightning fast.
Design and Ports
The ASUS VivoBook 14 X409JA-EK237T has a plastic chassis. The plastic chassis is quite tough and with very little flex. The display looks absolutely stunning with its stunningly thin bezels of 5.7mm the top bezel is slightly thick because of the webcam which is better than having a nose cam. The bottom hinge is one of the highlights of this device and cleverly hides the bottom bezel. Asus is calling this mechanism the ergo lift which is great for thermals and typing experience. There is a metal support brace underneath the keyboard which further enhances the typing experience and the keyboard feels very solid.
- 1x Micro SD Card Reader
- 2x USB 2.0 (Type A)
- 1x USB 3.1 (Type A)
- 1x USB 3.1 Type C
- Headphones And Audio Jack Combo
- 1x HDMI 1.4
Keyboard and Trackpad
The chicklet style keyboard feels solid and has very little flex due to the metal brace and the unibody design. The keys have a comfortable travel distance of 1.4 mm with 3 levels of brightness for its backlight. The trackpad is fairly large and smooth with a fingerprint reader on the top.
CPU: 10th Generation Intel Core i3 1005G1
The i3 1005G1 is part of its 10th Gen Ice lake lineup and can be found in budget and mid-range laptops. It has 2 sunny cove cores with 4 threads with a base clock of 1.2 GHz and 3.4 GHz. The 10 nanometers architecture allows the 1005G1 to draw less power and yield higher IPC (instructions per cycle) compared to its 8th generation counterparts (i3 8130U and i3 8145U). The higher IPC allows the ice lake CPUs to yield 18 percent more performance at the same clock speeds. The TDP of this Chip is specified by intel to be at 15 Watts but can vary anywhere from 13 to 25 watts.
The Intel Core i3 1005G1 is about 10 percent faster than its 8th gen counterparts.
RAM and Storage
The RAM and Storage of the ASUS VivoBook 14 X409JA-EK237T are configured at 4GB and 256 GB SSD. The 4GB DDR4 RAM runs in a single-channel at 3200 MHz there is one SO-DIMM. The max limit for memory support here is 12 GB. The 256 GB storage here is an M.2 NVMe SSD. Here you have 2 options for upgrading the storage with 1x M.2 Slots of which one is occupied and one 1x 2.5 Inch SATA slot which is available.
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics G1 (Ice Lake 32 EU)
The Intel UHD Graphics G1 has 32 graphical units. It is based on Gen. 11 architecture based on a 10 nm manufacturing process. It can support 4K at 60Hz with a peak resolution support of 4096×2304 pixels and it can support up to a maximum of three displays with this graphics processor.
When it comes the day to day tasks it is very capable of handling most of them however when it comes to much heavier workloads such a 3D rendering the UHD graphics G1 is not a good solution.
Display: 60Hz FHD (AU Optronics B140HAN04.0)
The FHD panel on the ASUS VivoBook 14 X409JA-EK237T has a 60Hz Refresh rate and doesn’t suffer from and noticeable issues such as backlight bleeding and PWM flickering. The display here has an average color coverage and below-average brightness and suitable for outdoor use.
- Panel Model Number: AU Optronics B140HAN04.0
- Coverage: 59% sRGB | 39% AdobeRGB;
- Measured Gamma: 2.50;
- Max brightness: 250 Nits;
- Contrast Ratio: 900:1;
- PWM Flickering: No;
- Response Time: 25 ms
How is the ASUS VivoBook 14 X409JA-EK237T for Gaming?
The Intel UHD G1 Graphics should be able to handle most modern games that are not very graphic demanding such as League of Legends, Dota 2, Minecraft, CS: GO, GTA 5, and Fortnite. But consider this it only has 5 percent of the benchmark performance when compared with industry-leading Nvidia RTX 3090. The other limitations here include the 60Hz refresh rate and (1920×1080) resolution. *These benchmarks are for the GPU and not of the CPU and GPU combination.
