AMD Ryzen 9 6900Hx Review

Launched in January of 2022, AMD Ryzen 9 6900Hx is an 8 Core/16 Thread processor for gaming laptops with a base clock of 3.3 GHz and can be boosted to 4.9 GHz. The chip is based on the Zen 3+ microarchitecture and is manufactured on a 6 nm process by TSMC with a TDP of 45 Watts Watts. Other Key Features Include AMD Radeon 680M integrated Graphics, support for USB 4 (40Gbps), and support for DDR5 4800MHz and Low power LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The “X” here indicates overclocking support.

AMD Ryzen 9 6900Hx comes integrated with Radeon 680M. The Integrated GPU is based on AMD’s RDNA2 architecture powered by 12 CUs (Compute Units) with a boost clock of 2.4 GHz and also features hardware raytracing. According to AMD, the 680M is faster than Nvidia’s Mx450. That being said any laptop which comes integrated with the AMD Ryzen 9 6900Hx will be paired with a dedicated graphics solution.

How is AMD Ryzen 9 6900Hx in terms of performance

In terms of performance, AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX is 5-10 percent faster than Apple M1 Pro in 3D in cinebench R23 and is roughly 10-15 percent slower than the 12th Gen Intel core i7 12700H in both single and multithreaded benchmarks. AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX is the second most powerful CPU of AMD’s 6000 series lineup for laptops after Ryzen 9 6980HX with a 300MHz boost over its predecessor the Ryzen 9 5900Hx and the IPC improvements. It goes without saying that the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX can easily handle day-to-day tasks such as Browsing, Streaming, and using office productivity softwares. Now, if we are talking about more demanding tasks such as editing, animation, and 3D applications the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX is a great option.

Cinebench R23 benchmark is the updated version of Cinebench R20 now with AVX instruction set support based on Cinema 4D.
