AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X | Review

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X is a 64 core, 128 thread processor designed for the high-end desktop processor based on AMD’s EPYC lineup it blurs the line between consumer and enterprise solutions. With no real competition in this market from intel or anyone else, the 3990X can only be compared with AMD counterparts. The target audience here is professional content creators working with 8K content, Android OS developers, and Game developers. Compatible with the new TRX40 motherboards the Threadripper 3990X has the same socket as its last-gen counterparts however the Threadripper 3990X is not backward compatible. AMD claims this was done to support PCIe 4.0.

Performance

Well, it’s overkill. Usually, when you get a CPU with a higher core count it would perform worse in lightly threaded workloads however that’s not the case with Threadripper 3990X in terms of single-core performance it goes toe to toe with AMD Ryzen 9 3950x. Now when it comes to multi-core performance there is nothing even that comes close to the Threadripper 3990X, as a matter of fact, it has the same silicon as AMD’s Epyc 7742 the only difference being 88 PCI express lanes instead of 128 and 4 instead of 8 memory channels.
